The Department of Neurosurgery at Mulago National Referral Hospital has taken a significant step forward in advancing the practice of micro-neurosurgery. On July 10, 2025, the department officially commissioned its newly installed Leica Microscope, marking a landmark achievement in its journey toward excellence in patient care, research, and surgical innovation.

The commissioning ceremony was presided over by Mr. Joel Kiryabwire, the Head of the Neurosurgery Department and a past President of the Neurosurgical Society of Uganda (NSU). The event was well attended by members of the NSU executive, senior neurosurgeons, and neurosurgery residents, all of whom gathered to celebrate this major milestone for the hospital and the neurosurgical fraternity in Uganda.

The acquisition of the Leica Microscope represents a new era for neurosurgery at Mulago. As one of the most advanced surgical microscopes available, it provides unparalleled clarity, precision, and illumination, enabling surgeons to perform delicate and complex brain and spinal procedures with even greater accuracy. This technology is expected to greatly enhance the outcomes of sophisticated surgeries carried out at the hospital, improving both patient safety and recovery.

For many years, Mulago National Referral Hospital has been at the forefront of neurosurgical services in Uganda and the region. However, the need for modern equipment has remained a pressing challenge. The installation of this microscope bridges a critical gap, allowing surgeons to keep pace with global standards in micro-neurosurgery and ensuring that patients in Uganda can access world-class surgical interventions closer to home.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Kiryabwire commended the collaborative spirit that made this achievement possible. He noted that the availability of cutting-edge tools like the Leica Microscope will not only elevate surgical practice but also serve as an invaluable training resource for residents and young neurosurgeons. “With this microscope, we can now undertake highly specialised procedures with more confidence, and we are equipping the next generation of neurosurgeons with the skills they need to meet tomorrow’s challenges,” he remarked.

The role of the leadership of Mulago National Referral Hospital in making this milestone a reality was also recognised and applauded. Their commitment to prioritising investment in advanced medical technology demonstrates a strong dedication to improving health outcomes for patients across the country. The department expressed heartfelt appreciation for the support and foresight of the hospital leadership in championing this initiative.

The commissioning of the Leica Microscope stands as a testament to what can be achieved through vision, collaboration, and a shared desire to advance healthcare. It reaffirms Mulago’s place as the leading centre for neurosurgical excellence in Uganda and underscores its role in shaping the future of medical practice in the region.

As the department looks to the future, this milestone symbolises not just the arrival of new technology but a renewed commitment to innovation, patient-centred care, and the continuous pursuit of excellence in neurosurgery.
